Description

This project sought to promote and celebrate both localities’ rich cultures and traditions. Citizens from both localities gathered in Naxxar, Malta to participate together in a series of activities spanning three days revolving around culture and tradition, in order to promote mutual understanding and tolerance. Moreover, we sought to discuss the effects this pandemic has left on our residents. In discussing their experiences, participants became more respectful and tolerant to each other. Through the series of activities planned to discuss and debate the pandemic, we aimed to strengthen participants’ sense of European belonging and identity.

Details of events day by day:
DAY 1: Culture and tradition – our religious and agricultural roots.
Introduction to the 2 localities and presentation by participants. Study Visit to religious and agricultural
organisations. Workshops on similarities and differences between Naxxar and Canicatti. Signing Ceremony (this had to be moved from the last day to the first day due to logistics issues) Exhibition Fair.

DAY 2: Culture and tradition and the role of civil society
Study Visit to cultural civil society organisations. Group discussion on the role of civil society in keeping culture and tradition alive. International Food Festival.

DAY 3: The social and economic impact of the pandemic Group discussion on the social impact of Covid. Workshops on the economic impact of Covid. Closing workshop on how to build the foundation for long-term cooperation and evaluation.

OUTCOMES

Short, medium-term effects

A total of 101 participants traveled from Canicatti, Sicily to Naxxar in Malta. Correspondingly, the
Naxxar Local Council matched this figure and include over 101 Naxxar residents. Thus, this project
involved a minimum of 202 participants. Thus, in reality this project involved numerous other local residents, all benefiting directly, in one way or another, in this project. The participants increased their active participation transitionally. Moreover, participants strengthened their mutual understanding and friendship between a diverse range of citizens at a local level. Also, participants increased their sense of belonging to the EU through their participation in the proposed activities.

Long-term effects
The long-term effects is to involve numerous other local residents, all benefiting directly, in one way or another, in this project. The participants increased their active participation transitionally by taking part in this project. Participants strengthened their mutual understanding and friendship between a diverse range of citizens at a local level. Moreover, through this transnational project participants will have increased their sense of belonging to the EU through their participation in the proposed activities.
